It is celebrated by the Buddhists and Hindus all over
the
Island in April every year. They celebrate this festival
just after the harvesting of paddy. According to the
zodiac calendar, New Year celebration will take place
during the period of which the sun planet travels from
the last house called Pisces to the first house called Aries. |

Poson (Buddhist Festival)

The full moon day of June (Month of Poson) in 247 BC,
a day significance in the annals of the history of Sri Lanka.
Buddhism was introduced to Sri Lanka on this day by the
most venerable Arahat Mahinda Thero, the son of the
emperor Asoka in India. To mark this occasion Poson
was celebrated in Sri Lanka every year during the full
moon day of the month of June. |
This Perahera ( Orderly Procession)
is held annually in the month of
Esala (July/August) in honor of the Sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha.
Starting at dusk from the Temple of the Tooth Relic, the Perahera
parades the streets of Kandy for ten consecutive nights. During
the
last five nights the Perahera becomes bigger and bigger until on
the
last two nights it becomes a truly magnificent spectacle with hundreds
of gaily caparisoned Elephants, Torchbearers, Flagbearers, Dancers,
Drummers, Flute players and Temple officials in glittering costume.
Viewers have described the Kandy Perahera as Asia's most
spectacular festival. |
